Hewitt knocked out of Dutch ATP event

Lleyton Hewitt has been beaten in straight sets by French veteran Nicolas Mahut in the first round of the ATP event at `S-Hertogenbosch.

`S-HERTOGENBOSCH, June 9 AAP - Lleyton Hewitt's farewell tour from the tennis world has endured another first-round defeat, with the Australian former world No.1 knocked out of the ATP event in the Netherlands.

Hewitt, in his final full season on tour, had been granted wildcard status but was sent packing in a straight sets loss to Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, who prevailed 6-3 6-4 on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old Hewitt is a former winner at `S-Hertogenbosch, triumphing in 2001 - the year before he won at Wimbledon, his second and final grand slam title.

His farewell circuit has so far offered up first-round defeats in Houston, Miami and Brisbane - and a second-round effort at the Australian Open in January.

Tuesday's other winners included seventh seed Fernando Verdasco, Jurgen Melzer, Joao Sousa and Adrian Mannarino, while Russian veteran Mikhail Youzhny was knocked out.
