Amid a sea of hi-vis, Scott Morrison has embarked on a charm offensive with the working man as he spruiked his government's $75 billion infrastructure program.

Exchanging hearty handshakes and posing for pictures with employees at the Downer rail maintenance centre in western Sydney, a buoyant prime minister credited his government with creating jobs such as those in front of him.

"When we talk about what that infrastructure means, the dividend of it you can see here," he told reporters in Auburn.

"It's apprentices, it's people in work, it's people in jobs and the long-term contracts that you see here."

Mr Morrison inspected the centre's railway infrastructure and maintenance works before taking time to address workers, telling them they'd all be paying less taxes thanks to his government.

He then announced his team was on track to return the budget to balance in 2019/20.

"It is that strong economic management, it is that strong financial management, it is that focus on investment, working together with states and territories to get this nation-building infrastructure on the ground that is making the difference," he said.
