Victoria's fire risk will remain high into the weekend after firefighters battled 10 fresh blazes during 40-degree temperatures for much of the state on Friday.
Of them, a grassfire near Kewell in the northwest remained a concern for most of the day.
A Watch and Act alert was issued for areas also taking in Kellalac, Kewell North, Minyip and Sheep Hills, with residents initially advised that leaving was the safest option.
However the blaze was safely brought under control shortly after 6pm.
"We started the day with no fires - all the fires that were burning yesterday were brought under containment and control so that was a good start for Friday," Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said.
"It's a hot day and we are obviously quite pleased to see that there has only been around 10 fires reported today, those are bushfires," he said.
However the fire risk remained high and would continue for much of the weekend for the northern parts of the state, Mr Lapsley said.
Rocky terrain near a fire at Mumbannar, on the South Australian border, proved difficult for firefighters who worked through the night to bring the blaze under control
The fire, which began in a sawmill and spread to a bluegum plantation, led to road closures.
A grassfire at Dreeite South, near Colac in the state's southwest, is under control after destroying two derelict houses and five sheds, and killing dozens of sheep on Thursday.
Firefighters continue to manage both blazes and are keeping a close eye amid blistering conditions across the state.
A total fire ban has been declared for the Mallee region in the state's northwest for Saturday.
