The Mayor of the outback South Australian town of Coober Pedy says he is hopeful a new Alcohol Management Plan will help address high rates of chronic alcoholism in his community.
The Coober Pedy council has just won $260,000 in federal funding for a coordinator for the five year plan.
It comes as the state's liquor licensing commissioner is considering restrictions on alcohol sales, including a complete ban on cask wine.
Mayor Steve Baines told Karen Ashford the amount of alcohol sold in the town is shocking, and the Management Plan has received strong community support.
