High temps prompt total fire ban for ACT

The ACT Emergency Services Agency has announced a total fire ban for the territory, saying there's also a severe fire danger rating.

A total fire ban has been declared for the ACT, with a severe fire danger rating also being issued.

If fires ignite on Sunday, uncontrollable flames higher than rooftops could move rapidly, and embers could be blown about, causing spot fires up to 4km ahead of the fire front.

"There is a chance people in the path of a fire may be injured or die," the ACT Emergency Services Agency said.

"Some homes and businesses may be destroyed."

The ESA said the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast northwest winds and a maximum temperature of 37C, prompting the ban and forcing the closure of several nature reserves and roads.

Further information can be found on the ACT Emergency Services Agency website www.esa.act.gov.au or by calling Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.
