High winds and cold front hit Victoria

A severe weather warning has been issued for much of Victoria as a cold front approaches the state.

A gust of more than 110km/h has been recorded in western Victoria as a strong cold front approaches the state.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for the south and east of Victoria as the cold front brings northwesterly winds of 55km/h to 70km/h and gusts from 90km/h to 100km/h about the ranges and coastal areas on Tuesday.

The strongest gusts so far include 111km/h at Mount William in the Grampians, 98km/h at Mount Hotham and 96km/h at Aireys Inlet, southwest of Melbourne.

Winds are expected to moderate and turn westerly later in the day as the cold front passes.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should move vehicles under cover or away from trees, secure or store loose items around the house and stay clear of fallen powerlines.
