Himmelberg's tweaks pay off for GWS in AFL

GWS forward Harry Himmelberg has revealed some technical tweaks are the reason behind his much-improved kicking accuracy during the past five AFL rounds.

Technical tweaks have made a big difference in accuracy for in-form GWS key forward Harry Himmelberg.

The 22-year-old, who faces Melbourne on Sunday in a significant final-round AFL clash at the MCG, has outlined the changes he's made after consultation with forwards coach Brad Miller.

Himmelberg kicked 12.5 in the first 17 rounds but has booted 13.3 in their past five games.

"I kick around the corner a little bit naturally, which was affecting the way that I was trying to kick set shots," Himmelberg said, so he "just made a few little tweaks" to his routine.

Miller told AAP that Himmelberg naturally kicked with a bit of an arc so the challenge was "trying to shape a routine around his kick".

One of only five Giants to have played every game this season, Himmelberg has enjoyed a breakout year.

With forwards Jeremy Cameron, Jon Patton and Toby Greene missing chunks of the campaign, Himmelberg has been a valuable source of goals.

The former key defender is their second leading goalkicker behind Cameron this season with 25, and his accuracy has improved markedly in the run to the finals.

Himmelberg approaches the Demons clash confident but expects a tough encounter as the Giants regroup after last weekend's loss to Sydney.

He said GWS's drop-off in contesting the football contributed to their derby defeat.

"We've done a pretty thorough review this morning and move on to Melbourne, who are another good contested-ball team," Himmelberg said.

Going into the final round, GWS and Melbourne want to improve on their respective ladder positions of sixth and seventh.

Himmelberg said it would be a big task for the Giants against a Demons side assured of playing finals football for the first time in 12 years and riding high after claiming their first top-eight scalp of the campaign in West Coast.

"It's really tough. They play a really good brand of footy," Himmelberg said.

"It's a really big contest this weekend and it will be a good hit-out right before finals for both teams."
