A man has been arrested and charged with sex offences against boys in Sydney's eastern suburbs in the 1980s and early 1990s.

A man is to appear in court on 17 charges of sexually and indecently assaulting boys in Sydney's eastern suburbs between 1984 and 1992.

Police allege the offences occurred at Waverley, Bronte, and Clovelly and involved five boys aged between nine and 12.

A 47-year-old man was arrested in Mascot on Wednesday and charged with 15 counts of sexual assault of a person under the age of 16, and two counts of committing an act of indecency on a person under the age of 16.
