Historic Tas Coles fire 'deliberately lit'

The historic first Coles store in Tasmania, at Wilmot near Devonport, was burned down deliberately, say police.

A fire that destroyed the historic first Coles store in northwest Tasmania was deliberately lit.

Forensic evidence from the blaze at Wilmot, near Devonport, in January has been reviewed by police, who say they are investigating an arson attack.

They have released photographs captured by security cameras of men they say can assist their inquiries.

The fire caused three people in the property owners' adjoining flat to flee, as well as an estimated $600,000 damage.

Supermarket giants Coles' humble beginnings can be traced to the general store that stood in the small town since 1910.

The Coles family operated the store from 1910-21, their first permanent retail outlet.

Founder George Coles' son, also George, went on to open the first Coles Variety Store in Melbourne in 1914.

The Wilmot store was reportedly to have been taken over by new owners in the week after the blaze.
