The third stage of the Tour de France has brought Australian team Orica GreenEDGE's first ever stage victory in the event.

It's the first time an Australian team has won a stage in the world's most famous road cycling race and an Australian cyclist Simon Gerrans was the rider to do it.

He beat Slovakia's Peter Sagan in a sprint finish to the 145.5 kilometre stage from Ajaccio to Calvi on the Mediterranean island of Corsica.

Murray Silby spoke with SBS cycling commentator David McKenzie after the stage who told him the historic win will be cause for great relief as well as excitement within the GreenEDGE team.
