An injured driver who fled the scene of a fatal head-on collision in central west NSW has been located.

Mirko Barbaric, 75, was killed in a crash involving his van and a ute on the Mitchell Highway, east of Lucknow, shortly after 9pm on Tuesday.

Mr Barbaric died at the scene but by the time police arrived, the driver of the flipped ute had left the crash site.

"He did have a head injury and we need to speak to him in relation to the circumstances of the accident," Inspector Dave Harvey told reporters on Wednesday.

Investigators arrested a 34-year-old man on a property at Lucknow about 4pm.

He was taken to Orange Police Station and then to Orange Health Service for treatment of a suspected fractured sternum.

Investigators seized several items for forensic examination and released the man pending further inquiries.

The Mitchell Highway was closed overnight but reopened on Wednesday morning.
