After 32 years of service with the Royal Australian Navy, HMAS Sydney will make its final entry into its namesake city on Friday morning.
The guided missile frigate, which will be decommissioned at the end of this year, will pass through Sydney Heads just after 8.30am and then berth at Garden Island.
Sydney's commanding officer Karl Brinckmann said a decommissioning pennant would be flown as the ship entered the harbour.
"It's a very thin pennant and will be held up by weather balloons. It's 138 metres in length, which is significant because it's the length of the ship," Commander Brinckmann told ABC radio.
He said the vessel would pass Bradleys Head about 8.40am, at which point the decommissioning pennant would be lowered.
At Garden Island, the ship will support technical training courses until its decommissioning.
During its service, Sydney had seen active service in Kuwait and East Timor, and has undertaken deployments to the Middle East.
