Hobbit misses out on Art Directors award

Gravity has beaten The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug for excellence in production design at the Art Directors Guild awards.

The second instalment of Sir Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy has missed out on an Art Directors Guild award.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug's production designer, Dan Hennah, was nominated for excellence in production design for a fantasy feature film.

The category was won by science fiction film Gravity at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Saturday night (Sunday AEDT).

The Great Gatsby won best period film and Her won best contemporary film.

The Wolf of Wall Street director Martin Scorsese was presented with the cinematic imagery award.
