Treasurer Joe Hockey has dismissed speculation that an early federal election is just weeks away.

"We have worked damn hard to get here and we still have much work to do," he told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.

While the ultimate decision will be made by Tony Abbott, Mr Hockey is sure the prime minister just wants to get on with the job of government.
