Hockey has a great story to tell: Abbott

Prime Minister Tony Abbott does not blame Treasurer Joe Hockey for the timing of the release of his authorised biography.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott understands why someone would want to write a book about his treasurer.

The authorised biography, Hockey: Not Your Average Joe, has been criticised for its timing and its self-indulgence.

But Mr Abbott says Joe Hockey has a "great story" to tell about migrants who came from the Middle East to Australia and their son becoming the treasurer of the nation.

"Joe's job, my job, as ministers in this government is to try to ensure every Australian family has the same opportunities," Mr Abbott told Macquarie Radio on Tuesday.

He's been in parliament for almost 20 years, a minister for most of that time and a senior member of the coalition for the last six years, the prime minister said of Mr Hockey.

"It's perfectly understandable that someone would want to write about him," Mr Abbott says.

Neither does he blame his treasurer for the timing of the book, saying once these projects are under way it is very much in the hands of the author.

Asked whether he tried to stop the book, Mr Abbott said: "I'm not normally in the business of trying to tell my people to hide their lights under bushels."

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said Mr Hockey should stick to his day job.

He said being treasurer is a full-time job, but obviously Mr Hockey sees it as part-time work and selling his biography is also a priority.

Mr Shorten said Mr Hockey has had a dreadful few months, coming up with a budget that no one likes and his own colleagues are clearly concerned about his judgment.

"I think the lesson here is when you are treasurer of Australia just stick to your day job and leave the literary flights of fancy to people who are not as busy as you," Mr Shorten told reporters in Melbourne.
