Joe Hockey isn't too keen to comment on the next Speaker after previously saying Bronwyn Bishop's infamous helicopter ride didn't pass the sniff test.

The treasurer was asked on Saturday who he backed to take her place when parliament resumes on Monday.

"I'm very reluctant to say anything publicly about that. Last time I said something about the Speaker it really did create some ructions," he told reporters in Sydney, noting the four or five candidates are outstanding.
