Joe Hockey is playing down his leadership role in a new bipartisan push for a republic.

The federal treasurer says the parliamentary friendship group, of which he will be co-convenor, will be among 77 groups on various issues and simply involves a few drinks in an MP's office.

"This is an example where people overreact," Mr Hockey told Sky News on Thursday.
