Hockey reduces game time, goes to quarters

Hockey games will soon be played over four 15-minute quarters, changing from the present 35-minute halves, allowing for more TV replays and analysis.

Hockey's world body has decided to change the game time from 70 minutes played in halves to 60 minutes in quarters to make it "more fan friendly".

To ensure the 60 minutes of playing time is maximised, there will be 40-second timeouts after penalty corners have been awarded and goals scored, to give teams time to reset.

The International Hockey Federation announced the rule changes on Thursday.

They take effect on September 1 and the first major event in the format will be the Asian Games that month at Incheon, South Korea.

The changes have been trialled in the Euro Hockey League and Hockey India League.

"The decision demonstrates our commitment to fan engagement," FIH president Leandro Negre said in a statement from the body's Swiss headquarters.

"With the additional breaks, fans will have the opportunity to enjoy more replays and be more engaged with the event, whether in the stadium or watching from afar, while hockey commentators will be allowed more time to provide sport analysis between plays.

"In addition, coaches and players will see improvement in their performance with the additional opportunities to rehydrate and re-strategise."
