Treasurer Joe Hockey says he remains opposed to same-sex marriage and won't say whether a free vote should be allowed in the Liberal Party.

Mr Hockey told Melbourne radio 3AW on Wednesday his view on the issue had not changed since legislation was voted down in 2012.

"There have been conscience votes (on other issues) but I don't know what will happen here, but we have a partyroom view about marriage being between a man and a woman," he said.
