Treasurer Joe Hockey will discuss the financial crisis in Greece with other finance ministers in China on Monday.

The Greek government unexpectedly failed to secure a bailout plan with eurozone ministers this weekend, raising fears that it may be forced to leave the euro while triggering a run on the banks.

Mr Hockey said he is carefully monitoring the situation.

The treasurer flew to Beijing on Sunday to formally sign-up to the Chinese initiative of an Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank with other countries, providing him with the opportunity to discuss the Greek situation with other finance ministers.

Before boarding his plane he was quick to soothe any local concerns before Monday's financial markets trading session.

"Australia is well placed for a Greek exit (from the euro)," Mr Hockey told AAP.

He said it was a lesson for everyone about the potential pain countries faced when they didn't get their budgets in order.

Greece's failure to secure a deal will be a surprise to everyone, including Mr Hockey, who last week was confident that an 11th hour deal would be struck to prevent a Greek default at the end of the month.

On Saturday night the Greek parliament voted to have a referendum next Sunday on the latest offer by its European Union and International Monetary Fund creditors.
