Treasurer Joe Hockey has delivered an upbeat assessment of the economy as he began a meeting with his state and territory counterparts.

"There are good signs in the economy that indicate we are withstanding significant overseas pressures," he said at the start of the twice-yearly gathering in Canberra on Thursday.

The economic state of the nation is one of several topics the treasurers intend to tackle along with the GST and the formula for its distribution, the intergenerational report, foreign investment, shortfalls in housing supply and the asset recycling programs.
