Joe Hockey has declined to speculate about his future the day after he announced he was leaving politics.

Asked by reporters outside his home in North Sydney on Monday if he could be Australia's next ambassador to the US, the former treasurer said: "Well, I'm not speculating on that, guys."

Mr Hockey said he would comment further on his future when federal parliament resumed in three weeks.
