Hockeyroos beat Malaysia in World League

Australia's women's hockey team scored three goals from penalty corners to defeat Malaysia at a World League tournament in Belgium.

Madi Fitzpatrick scored two goals as the Hockeyroos beat Malaysia 3-0 to begin their women's World League semi-final campaign in Belgium.

Australia scored all three goals through penalty corners in Brussels on Wednesday, taking the lead after four minutes when Fitzpatrick flicked in.

But the world no.4 Hockeyroos couldn't extend their advantage further before halftime despite several chances.

Australia scored again early in third quarter through Fitzpatrick and Georgie Morgan sealed the win a minute from full-time.

""It was good to see our corner better and getting some goals today," coach Paul Gaudoin said.

"It was nice to get a win in the first game. I think if we're serious about it we weren't at our best today, but it was pleasing to get the first game under our belt."

Australia next play hosts Belgium on Thursday before further group-stage matches against world no.5 New Zealand and Spain.
