Hockeyroos downed by Netherlands

The Hockeyroos have lost their final match of TPG International Tri-Series in Singapore, going down 4-1 to world No.1 The Netherlands.

Australia's women's hockey team have suffered a 4-1 loss to The Netherlands in their final match of the TPG International Tri-Series in Singapore.

The Hockeyroos were looking for redemption on Saturday after a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the world No.1 side Dutch earlier in the week, but were unable to maintain the strong defence they displayed in the opening 15 minutes.

After the Netherlands put the first point on the board with a penalty corner from captain Maartje Paumen, Australian forward Emily Smiths brought the scoreline even with a field goal in the 47th minute.

However, five minutes before the final siren, The Netherlands Kelly Jonker and Naomi Van As struck within two minutes of each other, putting the game out of reach.

Australia coach Adam Commens said he was happy with what he's seen from his side throughout the series.

"I'm pleased with our progress as a group throughout the tournament," he said.

"We have been able to use our whole squad over the past four matches, learning more about our players which ultimately allows us to take a step forward towards Rio.

"You win a gold medal by improving your team bit by bit over the next eight months, and then by producing the best team at the right moment, this is what we're trying to achieve."

The Hockeyroos now look to a six-match Great Britain Series in Bunbury and Perth next month.
