Hockeyroos lose bronze to USA in shootout

The Hockeyroos have finished a disappointing fourth in their last major tournament before the Rio Olympics after a 1-0 shootout loss to the USA.

Australia have finished a disappointing fourth at the Champions Trophy women's hockey tournament in London after being beaten to bronze by the USA in a sudden death shoot-out.

The Hockeyroos held the lead for the majority of Sunday's game after Mariah Williams opened the scoring with a field goal in the dying seconds of the first quarter.

Australia extended their lead in the third term as Grace Stewart sprinted the ball into the circle and sent it straight into goal.

However, USA got on the board in the 42nd minute as Katie Bam converted a penalty corner.

Bam then tied the score at 2-2 minutes before the final whistle as she knocked a field goal in to take the match to a shootout.

USA captain Melissa Gonzalez was the only player to score in the shootout, handing her side the bronze medal.

The six-team event was the Hockeyroos last major tournament ahead of the Rio Olympics, and coach Adam Commens was disappointed with the result.

"The frustrating thing about it is that you put in a great performance, and then you let a team into it," he said.

"It's something that I've spoken about throughout this tournament, that we need to be better at, and today, unfortunately, we weren't as clinical as I would have liked in that last quarter."

Earlier in the day, Great Britain took out their first win of the competition to finish in fifth position ahead of New Zealand.

Argentina and the Netherlands play for gold later on Sunday (Monday AEST).
