Hockeyroos lose to Netherlands

An inexperienced Hockeyroos side have lost 2-0 to the Netherlands in a warm-up tournament for their Olympic qualifying campaign.

The Hockeyroos have lost 2-0 to Olympic and world champions the Netherlands in second match of an international tri-Series in Singapore.

The tournament is part of the team's preparations for the Olympics and coach Adam Commens fielded a largely second-string side with seven changes made from the team that drew 1-1 with world No.8 Germany earlier this week.

Two first-half goals from Maria Verschoor and Roos Drost were enough to help the Dutch to victory, their first of the tournament following a 0-0 draw with Germany on Tuesday.

Commens said he was disappointed with the lack of pressure applied to the Dutch, a side the Hockeyroos tested in their World League match five weeks ago.

"Tonight, we didn't take the steps forward that we wanted to," Commens said.

"I was disappointed with how we handled the ball. Many parts of our game were off."

"At the World League we saw an even match where both teams created chances but tonight we made limited opportunities."

Commens said basic skill errors let the Hockeyroos down, but he did take heart in the performance of goalkeeper Ash Wells.

With just six months until the Olympics, Commens is using the tournament as a testing ground for his young side, with performances rather than results the focus.

"This tournament is about learning and exposing new players to this top level of international hockey," Commens said.

The Hockeyroos' third match is against Germany at (10pm AEDT) on Thursday.
