Hockeyroos win bronze-medal match spot

The Hockeyroos will face USA in the Champions Trophy women's hockey tournament bronze-medal match after overcoming Great Britain 4-1.

Australia will play off for third place at the Champions Trophy women's hockey tournament in London after sealing a 4-1 win over Great Britain.

After having their title hopes dashed by a 1-2 loss to The Netherlands on Thursday, a bronze medal in their last major tournament before the Rio Olympics would give the Hockeyroos a solid confidence boost.

The Australians appeared determined to finish in the top side of the six-team tournament as they opened the scoring within minutes of Saturday's starting whistle.

A converted penalty from Kathryn Slattery, and then a goal from in Australia's circle from Georgie Parker, gave the Hockeyroos a 2-0 lead just six minutes into the game.

Great Britain fought back fast in the second quarter, Sophie Bray firing just one minute in.

However, Australia extended their lead further in the third term, when Emily Smith sent an overhead tomahawk into the net, and then Jodie Kenny slammed a penalty goal in minutes later.

Coach Adam Commens said, overall, his side had delivered a satisfying performance.

"I think we saw the importance of taking your chances and we took them early, and we executed our penalty corners well and that's why we got the result," he said.

"What you need to try and do in the situation where you're ahead is to try to play smart, and to shut out the opposition and not allow them to get first touch on the ball.

"I thought we did that spectacularly for three quarters of the game and then the last quarter I thought we took our foot of the accelerator a little."

Australia next play in Sunday's (1.15am on Monday AEST) bronze-medal match against the USA, who earlier drew 1-1 with New Zealand.
