Hodgman welcomes 'jobs growth' budget

Tasmania's new Liberal premier says the federal budget will create jobs in his state.

Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman says the federal budget will stimulate jobs growth in the state with the nation's highest unemployment.

The new Liberal premier has welcomed commitments to Tasmania made in the 2013 federal election campaign.

"There's no doubt it's a tough budget, but the Tasmanian-specific initiatives announced tonight will help create jobs and build the economy," he said in a statement.

The major initiatives for Tasmania include $200 million to upgrade the Midland Highway between Hobart and Launceston and $38 million to extend Hobart Airport's runway.

Opposition Leader Bryan Green said the budget was an attack on the state's most vulnerable people.

"Will Hodgman is cheering his federal colleagues on from the sidelines while they leave almost all Tasmanians worse off," he said.

Mr Green said cuts to the CSIRO and Australian Federal Police airport patrols would hit the state hard.

The premier said the effect of updated GST forecasts on his government's first budget, to be delivered in August, would need to be examined further.

"Treasury is analysing the broader implications of the budget, including our share of the GST," Mr Hodgman said.
