Lionel Hollins reached tentative agreement on Wednesday to become head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, replacing Jason Kidd.
The announcement comes just two days after Kidd's decision to leave after only one season as Nets coach.
"We are very excited to welcome Lionel as the new head coach of the Brooklyn Nets," general manager Billy King said.
"He is a proven winner who will provide the franchise with stability and leadership going forward."
Kidd reportedly wanted more control in the organisation and, when his request was denied, he went after the head coaching job at the Milwaukee Bucks.
Kidd is a former Nets guard who had just finished his rookie season as a coach.
In exchange for allowing Kidd to leave, the Nets received two second-round draft picks (in 2015 and 2019) from Milwaukee.
Kidd went 44-38 as the Nets' coach and guided them to the second round of the playoffs, where they lost in five games to the Miami Heat.
Details of the contract were not released but US media reported that the 60-year-old Hollins would earn $US18 million ($A19.5 million) over four years.
