Hollywood descends on London for Baftas

Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett have walked the red carpet at the BAFTA awards in London.

Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have rubbed shoulders with British royalty at the BAFTA awards.

The superstar couple made an unexpected appearance on the red carpet in matching tuxedos and signed autographs for hordes of fans camped outside London's Royal Opera House.

Cate Blanchett, nominated for best actress for her role in Blue Jasmine, also walked the red carpet wearing a long, sleek black Alexander McQueen gown with silver floral motifs.

The event was attended by BAFTA president Prince William and is being hosted for a ninth time by actor Stephen Fry.

He opened proceedings with a tribute to Helen Mirren, who is to receive BAFTA's highest accolade this year.

Fry joked that the actress - who has played Queen Elizabeth II on stage and screen - had "this year brought her grandson along. Welcome his Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge".

Mirren wore a navy blue dress with chiffon sleeves while fellow dame Judi Dench, up against Blanchett for best actress, wore a dark velvet gown with turquoise cuffs.

Oscar-winner Emma Thompson arrived wrapped up in a red dress and white coat with a huge furry collar, while American Hustle star Amy Adams posed for photographers in a floor-length black gown from Victoria Beckham.

Another of the stars of hit film 12 Years A Slave, Lupita Nyong'o, posed for pictures on the red carpet in an emerald green Dior dress with matching shoes.

Among the outfits turning heads were Amy Adams in a flowing black Victoria Beckham design, while at the other end of the scale, singer Lily Allen went for a bright pink and orange dress with pink feathers in her hair.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and Tom Hanks, all nominated in the Best Actor category, were also among the stars in London for the event.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards are a useful guide to which way the Academy Awards might go on March 2.
