Home destroyed, damaged in NSW bushfire

One home has been lost, another damaged and multiple small buildings engulfed by a bushfire on the NSW south coast, the Rural Fire Service says.

A home has been destroyed, another has been damaged and several small structures have been lost in a bushfire on the NSW south coast.

The Rural Fire Service on Sunday afternoon confirmed one home had been destroyed by the Yankees Gap blaze which raged near Bemboka over the weekend.

The fire had been burning for a month in heavily wooded terrain and has claimed more than 18,000 hectares of land, the RFS says.

But Saturday's strong winds and high temperatures saw the intensity spike - spot fires crossed containment lines and severed a highway.

The initial investigation of the fireground also revealed another home was damaged and sheds, fences and other small "outbuildings" have been lost, an RFS spokesman told AAP.

The fire had sparked an emergency warning after strong northwesterly winds pushed the blaze towards Bega, with embers flying ahead of the blaze on Saturday afternoon.

That warning was downgraded as a cool change on Saturday night saw temperatures plummet.

The fire remains out of control and emergency crews remain on scene under a thick blanket of fog which has spread through the Bega Valley but there is no current threat to homes as of Sunday afternoon.
