Hong Kong stocks close 0.23% higher

The Hang Seng Index ended up 51.78 points to 22,587.72, while the Shanghai Composite Index ended down 0.77 per cent, or 16.35 points, to 2,119.07.

Hong Kong shares extended the previous day's gains to close up 0.23 per cent.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index ended up 51.78 points to 22,587.72 on turnover of HK$55.4 billion ($A7.93 billion).

The market had no cues from Wall Street, which was closed for the Presidents' Day holiday.

Internet giant Tencent rose 0.78 per cent to HK$584.50, while HSBC was up 0.79 per cent to HK$83.35.

Semiconductor manufacturing firm SMIC dropped 16.5 per cent to HK$0.67 and insurance firm ICBC also dipped 0.41 per cent to HK$4.84.

China Mobile also suffered a drop of 0.54 per cent to HK$73.65.

Chinese shares closed down Tuesday on profit-taking following recent gains, dealers said.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index ended down 0.77 per cent, or 16.35 points, to 2,119.07 on turnover of 129.8 billion yuan ($A23.77 billion).

The Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's second exchange, slipped 0.41 per cent, or 4.77 points, to 1,155.62 on turnover of 186.4 billion yuan.
