Hopoate raring to go in Bulldogs return

Canterbury say Will Hopoate is raring to go after sitting on the NRL sidelines for the past month because of his religious beliefs.

Canterbury have no fear of fullback Will Hopoate returning underdone after sitting on the NRL sidelines following his decision to choose religion over rugby league.

The in-form fullback will make his first NRL appearance since April 29 when the Bulldogs take on table-toppers Cronulla at ANZ Stadium on Monday night.

The former NSW representative sat out the Bulldogs' past three clashes, which were played on Sundays, because of his Mormon beliefs.

He made one appearance for the club's reserve grade side a fortnight ago to keep up match fitness and has trained with the squad throughout.

"He's been training full time and he played reserve grade so he's fit as a fiddle and ready to go," said Sam Perrett, who deputised for Hopoate at fullback during his absence.

Since moving from Parramatta, Hopoate has found his best form at Belmore under coach Des Hasler, crossing for six tries in his nine appearances in 2016.

He has also been excellent at getting his side's sets off on a strong foot, running for an average 130 metres a game.
