Horror holiday season on Tasmania's roads

Five people have died on Tasmanian roads over the Christmas/New Year period, leading to a government spokesman to plead with drivers to be more careful.

Tasmania's yearly road toll may be down, but five people have lost their lives over the Christmas/ New Year period.

Government spokesman Jeremy Rockliff said 33 people died on Tasmanian roads in 2018, slightly down from 34 in 2017.

"We need to do everything we can to drive down our road toll in Tasmania and we will keep working hard to achieve our Towards Zero vision," Mr Rockliff said on Tuesday.

"In 2019, I plead that all Tasmanians play their part in this significant challenge for our community."

In 2018, eight motorcyclists were killed and 78 seriously injured, compared to 11 killed and 74 seriously injured in 2017.

Police are still searching for the driver of a truck involved in a fatal hit-run collision in Brighton early on New Year's Day.

The victim, a man believed to be aged 20-30, is yet to be identified.
