Hospital staff to pay extra $725 to park

South Australian hospital staff will be faced with an additional $725 in annual car parking fees under the state government's fees, charges and tax increase.

South Australian hospital staff parking has come under the spotlight as the opposition expresses concerns over the state government's increased fees, charges and taxes.

Nurses, cleaners and other hospital staff will be hit with an additional $725 in car parking fees due to the government's price hike.

Metropolitan public hospital staff will see the fortnightly rate increase 129 per cent, from $21.59 to $49.50.

The changes will come into effect on January 1, 2020.

Opposition health spokesperson Chris Picton said those visiting patients will be faced with a 20 per cent increase.

"Nobody escapes here - staff are hit, patients are hit and their family and friends are hit," Mr Picton said.

"It will be a lot harder for families to visit and we want to be encouraging people to visit those in hospital.

"For those family members who work in hospitals, this is going to be a dire budget."

Jade Nikshin has been a nurse for 15 years.

She said she feared having to change her everyday lifestyle to meet the costs of attending work.

"This increase is going to be extremely difficult not only for me but all nurses," Ms Nikshin said.

"Getting to work safely in our vehicles and having to park is essential for us to carry out our day to day job."

The opposition said they obtained the figures and that the state government had not released the information.

But Health Minister Stephen Wade said the increase was mentioned in Treasurer Rob Lucas' press release in May.

"Information has been distributed to staff over recent weeks," he said.

"We've been completely upfront about this.

"Under the last seven years of Labor, they failed to maintain realistic car park fees and maintain revenue," Mr Wade said.

He said the car parking rates increased in accordance with inflation.

"In relation to staff car parking, it's set in accord with the weekly metro ticket rate, about half of the rate of public car park fees."

The state budget will be handed down on June 18.
