Hourcade to stay on as Pumas' rugby coach

Argentine rugby coach Daniel Hourcade has been given a contract extension to be in charge of the Pumas until the World Cup in 2015.

Argentine coach Daniel Hourcade has been given a vote of confidence with a new contract putting him in charge of the Pumas until the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

There had been doubts about his position following a disappointing November Test series in which his side lost to Wales and England and struggled to beat Italy.

But Argentina Rugby Federation chief Agustin Pichot said he had done enough to show he could revive the team's fortunes.

"Daniel has come through the federal ranks as a coach and we are fully confident that he can ensure we have a very successful World Cup," said the former Pumas' halfback.

"It is not going to be easy leading up to the World Cup, but we will depend on his experience and human qualities."

Hourcade was drafted in as national coach after the surprise resignation of Santiago Phelan in October following a poor showing by Argentina in the Rugby Championship against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

The choice took many by surprise as Hourcade was little known internationally where he coached in Portugal and at Rouen in France.

But back home, he made his name by being head coach with the youth team, the sevens squad and the Argentina B side.

With 10 defeats in 12 matches this year and a squad ravaged by internal divisions, Hourcade will face a tough task in getting the Pumas ready for the World Cup.
