How NSW will celebrate Australia Day

Sydney might steal the headlines but the rest of NSW is set to celebrate Australia Day with gusto.

Ferries will vie with tall ships and warships as Sydney Harbour takes centre stage on Australia Day.

Tug boats and yachts will perform their annual ballet, ferries will race, and the newly-commissioned HMAS Canberra will shine ahead of a group rendition of the national anthem at midday.

That's all after a group of swimmers brave take to the waters of Farm Cove for a 6am race.

Elsewhere, there are markets in the Rocks, entertainment for the kids in Hyde Park and evening fireworks over Darling Harbour.

The rest of NSW is set to party equally proudly.

On the north coast, scores of surfers will make their way from Wategos to Byron Bay Surf Club in the Australia Day paddle.

Meanwhile, in Coffs Harbour, celebrated Aboriginal songwriter Archie Roach headlines a celebration of indigenous culture at the Saltwater Festival.

Further south, celebrations in Newcastle start with live performances and culminate with a live site broadcast of the first semi-final of soccer's Asian Cup at 6pm.

There's harness racing in Parkes and a vintage car show in Orange, while the cuddly critters of Taronga Western Plains Zoo will star at celebrations in Dubbo.

Revellers in Goulburn can take the day in from the air courtesy of helicopter rides, with Wollongong hosting skydivers and a laser skirmish.

On the south coast, Kiama will embrace Australiana with brickie races and thong-throwing competitions.

An umbrella might be in order, however, with rain forecast across much of the state.
