The attack on the Charlie Hebdo office in Paris has once again put the world spotlight on Islamic extremism.

The magazine's past depiction of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad is reportedly one of the motives of the gunmen who attacked.

Some members of the Australian Muslim community say they suffer every time such attacks are carried out by extremists.

Mohammed Elleissy is a former youth worker with the Islamic Council of Victoria.

He's speaking to Kristina Kukolja.
