Hugh Laurie will swap his acting chops for his skills as a blues musician when he tours Australia during April and May.

As a pianist and vocalist, the British actor and comedian teamed up with the Copper Bottom Band to release his debut album Let Them Talk in 2011 and a follow-up, Didn't It Rain last year.

The star of the US medical drama House said in a witty statement that he's excited to be coming to Australia.

"The last time I was there was 1981, in a comedy show, and the world has changed a lot since then. I haven't though. I'm exactly the same. It's uncanny.

"Obviously, I'll be hoping to restore some national pride after the Ashes. If anyone throws anything at me, I'll lob up an easy catch to the balcony."

HUGH LAURIE AUSTRALIAN TOUR DATES:

April 19 - Palais Theatre, Melbourne

April 22 - Royal Theatre, Canberra

April 24 - Thebarton Theatre, Adelaide

April 26 - Concert Hall, Perth

May 2 - Brisbane Concert Hall

May 3 - Civic Theatre, Newcastle

May 5 - State Theatre, Sydney
