Overlooked batsman Phil Hughes says he's being counselled by selection chairman Rod Marsh about his latest Australian snub.
Hughes has been a prolific scorer for Australia A in the ongoing top end series, becoming the first Aussie to hit a double-century in a one-dayer.
But the left-hander's feats couldn't win a spot in Australia's 14-man touring party for a limited overs series in Zimbabwe later this month.
"I was really disappointed not to get selected for that," Hughes told reporters in Townsville on Wednesday.
Chairman of selectors Marsh says Steve Smith was favoured over Hughes for a batting berth, and has sought out Hughes to explain the reasoning.
"He has been really good," Hughes said of the former Test gloveman.
"You don't have to be Einstein to realise it's about scoring runs and continuing to score more runs.
"I have spoke to Rod a number of times over the last week and he has been very supportive.
"They only took 14 to Zimbabwe, that is not many in the squad - there wasn't really room for me, and that is what he said."
Hughes will captain Australia A against South Africa A in a four-day fixture in Townsville starting Thursday.
