South Australia opener Phil Hughes blew a good chance to push his case for an Ashes call-up after being dismissed for 25 in the Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia at the WACA Ground.
And Mitchell Johnson recovered from a wayward start to claim a deserved wicket.
At lunch on the opening day, the Redbacks were 2-100 with Sam Raphael on 21 and Tom Cooper yet to score.
Hughes received a life on five when Cameron Bancroft dropped a tough one-handed chance at third slip.
But his luck ran out shortly after, with an attempted hook off the bowling of paceman Jason Behrendorff skying into the air for wicketkeeper Sam Whiteman to catch.
Johnson (1-30 from eight overs) opened his day in horrendous fashion, with two of his first three balls called wides.
The 32-year-old was lucky not to have another two wides called during the over.
But he bounced back to produce a solid spell, and was unlucky not to claim the wicket of Raphael when John Rogers dropped a diving, one-handed attempt at gully.
Travis Head put WA's attack to the sword with a 44-ball half-century, which included 10 boundaries.
Johnson's speed picked up in his second spell, and his bouncers had the Redbacks' batsmen battling.
His good work was finally rewarded when he trapped Head lbw for 51.
