Hundreds come to 10-year-old's birthday after mum's emotional Facebook plea

Hundreds of people have rallied around a 10-year-old US girl whose mother posted a plea to Facebook after no one RSVP’d to the girl’s birthday invitation.

Mackenzie Moretter, who was diagnosed with a rare condition called Sotos Syndrome as a baby, was looking forward to celebrating her 10th birthday party this month.

But her mother Jenny Moretter grew concerned when none of the 10 people she had invited RSVPed.

Sotos Syndrome causes children to grow at an excessive rate and can cause intellectual disability and behavioural problems. Mother Jenny said her daughter also struggled to make friends.

So she posted an emotional plea to Facebook saying, "Let’s make this Mackenzie’s BEST birthday ever".

"Hello moms," she wrote. "I’m writing because I have a beautiful daughter named Mackenzie who is turning 10. I recently invited several girls to her birthday party this Saturday. I got cancellations or no calls at all saying whether they’re coming or not.

"My daughter has Sotos Syndrome which means she has development delays such as speech and learning. At school she struggles and is often alone on the playground.

"As a mother, it is heartbreaking being you want your children to be happy. I’m reaching out to moms who have daughters between the age of 9-11 that would love to come to a birthday party tomorrow from 11-1:30. You don’t have to bring gifts or stay long, just stop by and wish her a happy birthday."

The post soon went viral and because of the large numbers of people who responded, the party venue had to be changed to a nearby park.

Hundreds of people showed up on the day, including Minnesota Vikings football player Charles Johnson.

Addressing guests at the party, Jenny teared up as she spoke about what it meant to her daughter.

"They all want the same thing and that’s just to be accepted and have friends," she said. "And be loved."

The Mayor of Shakopee, Brad Tabke, named the day "Mackenzie Moretter Day" in honour of the 10-year-old.

In a post after the party, Jenny thanked everyone for their support.

"Our entire family is overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support for Mackenzie," she wrote.
