Hungary's Ferencvaros names Rebrov as manager to replace Doll

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungary's 29-times champions Ferencvaros named former Ukrainian forward Serhiy Rebrov as their new manager on Wednesday, after German Thomas Doll left the club on Tuesday after five years in charge.

"In every team where I have worked, the first place (in the championship) and (success in) international competitions have been the goals, and that is no different with Ferencvaros," Rebrov told the club's website.

Rebrov rose to prominence in the 1990s as Andriy Shevchenko's strike partner at Dynamo Kiev, before going on to play for Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United in England.

He retired from playing in 2009 having been capped 75 times by his country, scoring 15 goals.

As a manager, he coached Dynamo Kiev between 2014 and 2017, leading the club to two Ukrainian Premier League titles and into the knockout stages of the Champions League.

He was coach of Saudi Arabia's Al-Ahli until April of this year.

Ferencvaros lead the Hungarian top flight after five matches, having finished second last season.

The team won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, the predecessor of the UEFA Cup and then Europa League, in 1965 and reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup ten years later.

Under Doll's reign they failed to qualify for the Champions League or Europa League group stage.
