Brisbane playmaker Ben Hunt is determined to kickstart his stalled career this season and help reinvigorate the Broncos as a premiership force.

A utility player for much of his career since making his NRL debut at 19, Hunt shapes as a key figure in the Broncos' efforts to rebound from their worst season.

Given their dearth of playmakers, Hunt is set to be called on by coach Anthony Griffin to spark the Broncos' attack.

"Hook (Griffin) has been really into me at training, he has got me working really hard and he expects a lot from me," Hunt told AAP.

"He wants me to be more of a leader and really step up now we have lost a couple of senior players.

"I feel I have still got a lot of work to do in that area. In the past, I probably haven't been capable of it.

"We have lost a couple of great halves over the last few years so, if I can really cement a spot in the halves position, I will be really happy.

"I feel like I have grow into the position, I feel a lot more comfortable in the squad and I can lead us around a bit more."

Key recruit Ben Barba shapes as a crucial cog in the Broncos' attack with Scott Prince (retirement), Corey Norman (Parramatta) and Peter Wallace (Penrith) all leaving Red Hill at the end of last season.

Hunt is keen to shake off his utility role and emerge as a key ally of Barba's.

"My career has stalled a little bit. It has been a learning curve for me," Hunt, 23, said.

"I have found myself playing that utility role off the bench a fair bit and I was just happy to be in the side and happy to do what is best for the side.

"But now, I really want to push for a starting role. I have grown up a bit and it's my time to go to that new level.

"The last couple of times I got a shot at the halves, I was in for a couple of games and then out again but now I want to make the spot mine.

"If I can get games under my belt there, I can really play a role."
