Former Broncos hardman Trevor Gillmeister has no problem with Ben Hunt's defection to the Dragons, saying it may finally exorcise the halfback's grand final demons.

Brisbane No.7 Hunt recently confirmed he had signed a five-year, $6 million deal with the Dragons from 2018.

Gillmeister said moving away from Brisbane may be the best thing for Hunt in the wake of his 2015 grand final howler.

Hunt infamously knocked on in the lead-up to North Queensland's premiership-winning golden point field goal.

"Some people say it is disloyalty but sometimes that is the best thing to happen for them - they move on, they rejuvenate," Gillmeister said of Hunt's Dragons deal.

"I think it is good for his development.

"He needed to move on, maybe he had a bit of baggage from that grand final."

Hunt has been named in a 19-strong squad to play in Saturday night's NRL trial against defending champions Cronulla at Redcliffe.

Kiwi international Alex Glenn returns from off season shoulder surgery and ex-Gold Coast flyer David Mead and former Knight Korbin Sims will make their Broncos debut.

Broncos trial squad to play Cronulla at Redcliffe: Jamayne Isaako, Nikau Terupe, Marion Seve, Tautau Moga, David Mead, Sam Scarlett, Ben Hunt, Joe Ofahengaue, Travis Waddell, Herman Ese'ese, Alex Glenn, Tevita Pangai jnr, Jai Arrow. Interchange: Todd Murphy, George Fai, Aaron Rockley, Salesi Funaki, Korbin Sims, Corey Allan.
