Hurn to captain AFL Eagles again

Former Hawthorn captain Sam Mitchell has been voted into West Coast's leadership group despite having spent just four months at his new AFL club.

Shannon Hurn will captain West Coast for a third straight season, while former Hawthorn premiership star Sam Mitchell has earned a leadership role at his new AFL club.

Hurn took over as captain from Darren Glass at the end of the 2014 campaign, and was emphatically endorsed by his fellow players and the coaching staff to lead once again.

Mitchell arrived at West Coast via a blockbuster trade in October and has quickly established himself as a valuable part of the group.

Luke Shuey was appointed joint vice-captain alongside Josh Kennedy, while Andrew Gaff and Jeremy McGovern were voted in to the expanded seven-man leadership group.

Matt Priddis retains his spot in the leadership group, but defender Eric Mackenzie was dumped after struggling to establish his spot in the side last season.

Hurn described it as an honour to captain the group again, and coach Adam Simpson was pleased with the amount of leadership material at his disposal within the squad.

"Shannon Hurn has been a terrific leader since his appointment as captain three years ago and he has great respect from his teammates," Simpson said.

"Over the last couple of years Luke Shuey, Andrew Gaff and Jeremy McGovern have certainly grown within the group and it has been reflected in the player vote.

"Clearly Josh Kennedy and Matt Priddis have been outstanding leaders for a long time and to have someone of Sam Mitchell's calibre at our disposal will be invaluable."
