Hurrell outshines Hayne for Titans in NRL

Jarryd Hayne's return from injury to the NRL has attracted headlines but statistics say the real threat is coming from Konrad Hurrell.

Jarryd Hayne's NRL form since his injury return has attracted plenty of attention, but statistics reveal he is being outshone by giant Gold Coast centre partner Konrad Hurrell.

In the five games they have played together this season, the Tongan international has scored six tries to Hayne's three and he averages 144 metres compared to 71.

Hurrell is a long way clear of the next best Titan with 26 tackle busts this season, but coach Neil Henry does not think the success of the ex-Warrior is due to defences focusing more on Hayne's side of the field.

"Konrad makes his own metres because he's nice and direct and likes carting the ball forward," Henry said of Hurrell, whose 1101 metres is second only to prop Jarrod Wallace.

"He's been tremendous for us, he looks to work and get his hands on the ball - particularly taking the ball from down our end of the field."

Hurrell is fresh from a two-try performance against Melbourne, but concedes he's still looking to build consistency into his game.

What he has built at Gold Coast, however, is some job security and faith from the coaching staff, something he had never achieved in four seasons with the Warriors.

"I'm still developing as a player. Last week, they scored three or four tries on my edge," Hurrell said.

"If I had of let a few tries in at the Warriors, I probably would have been dropped from the team. As soon as I came here (to the Titans), I noticed that it's different," Hurrell said.

"Every time I've had a poor game, they've told me what I need to do to improve and that's what I'm working on every week."

Henry joked he'd love to see the blockbusting centre develop a sidestep.

"I might need to. Against (the) Sharks, I broke through the line and tried to step the fullback," Hurrell said.

"I ended up stepping about five metres too early and the boys told me to get rid of the step and run over him ... I tried it, but I don't think it's my game."
