Hurricanes name fringe squad to face Blues

Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett has left his All Blacks out of their first pre-season game against the Blues.

Most of the Hurricanes' big names are missing from the side named to face the Blues in their first pre-season match at Masterton on Saturday.

Ten 2013 All Blacks squad members haven't been included in a 27-man group to play the Super Rugby warm-up, while Samoan international back Alapati Leiua is also not selected.

Coach Mark Hammett has included players from his wider training group and others from the Hurricanes catchment region to make up the team.

A strong-looking loose forward trio comprises No.8 Brad Shields and flankers Ardie Savea and Jack Lam. Savea will play his first game since touring Europe as a non-playing member of the All Blacks in November.

Tasman fly-half Marty Banks will make his Hurricanes debut, potentially marking cross-code star Benji Marshall.

HURRICANES: Nehe Milner-Skudder, Newton Tudreu, Tim Bateman, Cardiff Vaega, Matt Proctor, Marty Banks, Chris Smylie, Brad Shields, Ardie Savea, Jack Lam, James Broadhurst, Mark Abbott, Brendon Edmonds, Joe Royal, Chris Eves.

Reserves: Motu Matu'u, Adrian Barone, John Schwalger, Mark Reddish, Blade Thomson, Faifili Levave, Adam Hill, Callum Gibbins, Billy Guyton, Beaudein Waaka, Hadleigh Parkes, Andre Taylor.
