Husband dies after fatal NSW house fire

An elderly man has died after he managed to escape a house fire south of Sydney that claimed the life of his wife.

An elderly man has died a day after a house fire south of Sydney killed his wife.

Emergency services were called to the blaze in the coastal town of Gerringong, near Kiama, on Monday afternoon.

A man, 90, managed to jump from the second floor balcony and was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital with critical injuries.

His 88-year-old wife's body was found inside the house once the fire was extinguished.

Police confirmed the man died in hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious.

A neighbour told the Illawarra Mercury the elderly man said an electric blanket started the fire.

"He said something ... went wrong with the electric blanket," the neighbour told the newspaper.
