The Sydney Thunder have landed a signing coup with recently-retired international star Mike Hussey signing on to partner Test skipper Michael Clarke for the third Big Bash League season.

The Thunder have finished last in the opening two Big Bash seasons, including last year's miserable winless effort.

But the 38-year-old's signing is an instant boost ahead of the upcoming season, with the 79-Test veteran aiming to bring his experience to a young Thunder squad.

"I'm extremely excited about joining the Sydney Thunder and having the opportunity to be part of a young, energetic side that will represent the West of Sydney with pride," Hussey said in a statement.

"The team and the area have enormous potential and I hope that I can bring my experience to help get the best out of the side and develop the talented playing group that we have."

Hussey leaves last year's finalists Perth Scorchers, admitting the decision weighed heavily on him.

"It was not an easy decision to leave the Scorchers, but the challenge of helping a young team grow was one I couldn't pass on," he said.

Clarke, who joined the Thunder last season but didn't play a game due to a back injury, confirmed he would return to the team for a second season.
